Description: Most students make less than minimum wage in graduate school and their debt takes a decade to pay off. Does it have to be this way?
This webinar will focus on practical methods to find additional and alternative sources of graduate funding.
Topics include how to:
• find low-competition awards,
• choose which ones to apply for (e.g., by estimating expected value),
• ask companies for research funding,
• avoid common pitfalls (e.g., internal versus external deadlines, nomination requirements), and
• write effective applications (e.g., by focusing on the evaluation).
The webinar is most relevant for current and prospective grad students in research-based programs in Canada. We will discuss examples of students who obtained substantial graduate funding through alternative sources.
Biography: Jay Olson, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. During his graduate studies at McGill University, he was offered 30 scholarships, grants, and financial awards from Mitacs, SSHRC, NSERC, FRQSC, IRRST, SCEH, and other unpronounceable acronyms. He is writing a book called Million Dollar PhD on effective graduate funding in Canada.
