CWWA 2024 Winner Interview With Stephanie Fowler from Canuck Place Children’s Hospice

More about Canuck Place Children’s Hospice: Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is Canada’s first freestanding children’s hospice that supports end of life care and family support. In 2023, Canuck Place received The Canadian Compassionate Company designation from the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

They are focused on supporting the well-being of their employees through a “Care for the Caregiver Committee” and all staff participate in Mental Health First Aid. A People and Culture Team are certified in Effective Workplace Strategies for Mental Health and conduct workshops on topics such as; compassion fatigue, staying grounded in stressful work and other supportive topics.

  • Maturn: Canuck Place has partnered with Maturn to support employees transitioning to maternity leave and working parents by providing a network of support. This partnership includes comprehensive programs that empower women through key life transitions, including fertility, maternity leave, motherhood, and peri/menopause.

Canuck Place collaborates with experts to support employees’ mental health and well-being:

  • Grief & Loss Workshop: Held annually in December, this session helps employees support colleagues returning to work after a bereavement. Facilitated by Sarah Kim, RCC, who specializes in grief and loss.
  • Vicarious Trauma & Burnout Training: Led by Heather Scott, MCP, RCC, and Nina Sheere, MCP, RCC, these sessions focus on trauma impact, prevention, and skills-building. This year, they trained the Recreation team and will work with Housekeeping in September.
  • Mental Health Training: In addition to annual Mental Health First Aid training, staff will also receive Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) this year.
